Mo Xiaosong’s artistic ingenuity extends further, deftly merging elements of Chinese colored pottery, the Majiayao culture, and Greek vase painting. He intricately weaves together Chinese Dunhuang colored sculptures with Greek sculptures. In recent years, Mo Xiaosong has approached Western cultural artifacts through the eyes of a Chinese artist, embarking on multiple journeys to Athens, Rome, Sicily, Milan, and other foreign lands for inspiration, traversing the world in both body and spirit. While capturing the essence of exotic cultures, he remains firmly rooted in his own cultural heritage. In his creations, Mo Xiaosong deftly reproduces and reinterprets select elements from Dunhuang murals. His aim is to merge theexpressive and interpretative approach of Chinese ink painting with the artistic allure of ancient Greece and Rome. His ultimate aspiration is to embody a cultural ideal of harmony between East and West, echoing thecultural idealof “to cherish one’s own beauty and appreciate others’grace, a world of grand harmony we embrace”.

2020年-庞贝之殇145x240cm(加厚熟宣 水墨 矿物质颜料 金)

Sorrow of Pompeii, 2020, 145x240cm (thickened shuxuanpaper, ink, mineral pigments, gold)

Sorrow of Pompeii

Fire extinguishes

The earth

Starts pondering on the history

Souls and bodies that once burned with passion

After the memory is gone

Begin to wake up

Melody of joy

Graceful lines

Fromthe wounds and scars

The darkness

All the colors

In the same space and time

Are complaining about the unfair fate?

Or waiting for the return of life?

Now, the lost statue of life is being built

On the field of time

Staying silent

Under the high sky and low clouds, the hearts are sad

All beautiful things

Will be plundered

All of the cherished

Must be destroyed?

In my flurry of recollections

Whosegaze

crossesthe cloudless sky?

Who can decipher

My urgent plea?

Nothing

Can burn forever

After burning in a prairie fire

Everything still needs to return toashes

—True in this life

Longing for rain on souls

That waters the whole thirsty jungle of life

Let the vines climb

Let the moss spread

Let the fog permeate each day

Blocking the mountain road to rebirth

Pompeii has been destroyed

How many encounters and bitter farewells

How great the prosperity has been

Pompeii has been destroyed

But I haven’t forgotten

Every moonlit night

It’s brimming with moonlight

Recording the footprints

Of time

Hoping

In a thousand years

Iwill be still here

Waiting for you
